Fall Price Fall The leaves are falling. The prices are falling. The i-series is no longer $4,950 but it now costs $4,495. That's almost $500 off the old price. (Segway pictured didn't fall, it is just taking a nap.) |

Well, I'll be. The engineers at Segway have improved the safety of the i, e and p series machines to such a safety plus degree that they've put out a general recall to upgrade software to Version 12. Okay, the Consumer Product Safety Board put them up to it. A bit of history. Until mid-summer, Version 11 was top dog. And most machines were born with Version 10. This update is for ALL machines. But a few folks pushing the limits of the machine--with nearly exhausted batteries--were injured when the machine couldn't keep up with their demands. One guy required stitches. He was wearing no helmet as per Segway's instructions. Plus pushing the limits of the machine into territory Segway's instructions said "Don't go!" and that seems to have done the trick. Plop! Ouch! I'm calling that Consumer thing! (People ask me if it completely prevents me from falling. I always tell them that I've fallen off my FEET before, so of course you can fall off the HT. I get a lot of "me, too"-s from that.) Safety is Priority Zero at Segway LLC. Not to suggest that it is low, but that it precedes anything else that could be called Priority One. They're real picky about safety over there, so the new code is a Good Thing. They've reworked the code and improved low battery safety performance. It prevents you from getting as close to the inevitable failure that a complete lack of power would cause by reducing performance. Cleverly, they have not reduced the machine's range. Upgrades are free and apply to all machines, new, used, or acquired. Check Segway LLC for the real details. About the picture: No Segways were harmed in the making of this photo montage. But you can open it in a new page and view it a bit larger. |

(subject to change) Los Angeles: Huge gathering of Segway owners invades Griffith Park. Major Fun Had. Check it out! May, 2003 --better late than never-- The Bertone
Way IS the Segway. Would you look at that car over there! Fabulous. But the girl on the left is riding its chief accessory, the Bertone Version of the Segway HT which is included, even integrated into the car. It fits inside the trunk and serves as the last leg of your journey. Smart folks, those Bertones. Bertone, the Italian coachbuilder, has adapted BMWs Z8 chassis giving it the plus-extra Italian treatment. Enter the Bertone Birusa with its custom Segway Bay at the rear of the car. Here's a car that is designed AROUND the Segway HT, making the two ideas into one inseparable, but separable, transportation evolution. Not only does Italy have the best food in the world (sorry France, we must speak the truth here, after all, it IS the Internet) but there is zero question about their ability to design the best cars in the world, not from a Fiat mechanical perspective, rather from a "looks" perspective. The Birusa's
tail port lowers to the ground behind the car giving easy access
for the Segway HT to roll in for storage and out for the last
mile of your journey. The car is only a concept at this stage, but it is based on the BMW Z8 chassis, which you may remember from BMW class as not having the 400 horsepower of this Bertone adaptation. For a master car designer like the Bertone studio to put their efforts into joining the HT and car designs into an integrated unit is significant. It means more than all the speculation on the Internet and takes the perspective view that the car and the HT are compatible transportation elements of a fundamental and primary order. I don't know about that model's coat, however... Click on any of the images to hear about this exciting concept car from the horsepower's mouth, Bertone of Turin. Ciao! ![]() ![]() |
