The Bob's Ride(s) #1: Bob's Big Boy in Toluca Lake California hosts an LA tradition on Friday nights. Everybody with a cool, cherried out, super classic car shows up in an impromptu gathering of the automotive clans. It's been going on for decades. Now it glides. Five Segway owners cruised Bob's on Friday, March 14 from about 6:30 to 10:00 PM and "connected." Among the hot rods, classics, antiques, ultra-sports -cars and tweaked motorcycles, the handful of HT's became the hit of the evening. Five owners, DonK, Wheels, BruceWright, toybuilder and I gave demos late into the evening. Everybody smiled. Many had their first glide. Nobody got off it saying, "so what." Here are some quick snaps: ![]() DonK had lighting solved. Sharp eyes may spot the bell on his handlebars... Wheels explains something... Note the thick pad he's put on the base to "even out the bumps." You can tell Wheels' machine by the chrome stripping on the fenders, too. Now his wife's HT has the same family "trim." BruceWright walks along an increasingly experienced glider. ![]() One of the youngest gliders of the night. The wire thing on the control shaft is a bike lock with internal alarm. Note the slick black stripping on the fenders. That blue gizmo is a strobing LED stick. Getting the hang of it was the order of the day. And everybody did. ![]() |

Ours or our Segways'? Arrival was at your convenience. We didn't have any trouble spotting each other. All sorts of
It runs from the portion highlighted in the map here more than a mile southeast to Venice Boulevard and beyond. A true test of Segway integration with foot traffic. The parallel winding bike lanes make getting out of the crowded areas quite easy.

This is taken from in the thick of it. Still, no toes bruised.
One of the many demonstration riders dicovering that there's more to life than just sex, drugs and/or rock n' roll.
You're kidding? No? Not kidding. The Power Assist mode turns the HT into a "ski boat" for skaters. |
